Abstract

In 1933, a young engineer named Harry Beck designed a plan for the London Underground network that was widely adopted by users. England, which was at the forefront of railway development, already had a map tradition; however, the emergence of the “underground” made railway network maps become part of popular culture. What kind of conceptual and graphic transformations affected the Underground maps during the expansion of the underground network and the massification of this means of transport? What effects did these plans have on the configuration of the urban imaginary of London? What cultural resonances emerge from the innovations introduced by Harry Beck’s model in the first half of the twentieth century? These are some of the questions that this article aims to answer.
